With the weather seemingly more fitting to the month of November rather than August, the Cobblers reserves kicked off their Pontins Holiday Combination league campaign on Tuesday afternoon when they welcomed a strong looking Ipswich Town side to Sixfields.

Ipswich took the lead on 10 minutes from what was the first real chance of the game. The goal came from a corner with Danny Haynes drilling the ball home into the bottom left hand corner of the net, giving Chris Dunn no chance.

The Cobblers first chance came 6 minutes later, a superb 50-yard pass from Liam Dolman setting up a Cobblers attack which ultimately culminated in Alex Dyer's overhead kick sailing just inches over the crossbar.

Dyer was involved again on 27 minutes with his shot from just inside the penalty area going narrowly the wrong side of the post.

Ipswich doubled their lead on the half hour, Danny Haynes scoring from the spot after he had been fouled by Nick Thorogood.

As the Cobblers looked to pull a goal back Colin Larkin did well to dispossess Michael Synnott but the Ipswich keeper was alert to the impending danger and did well to smother Larkin's shot from 12-yards.

There was no further action of note in the first half ensuring that the Tractor Boys two goal lead was still intact at the break.

Ian Sampson made one change at half-time with prolific goalscorer for the youth team, Shaun Goodall, coming on for Daniel Jones.

The impressive Danny Haynes completed his well deserved hat-trick on the hour mark, rising highest to head home from a corner.

The Cobblers made their second change on 66 minutes with Ben Judd replacing Brett Johnson.

Ipswich nearly increased their lead further a minute later but this time Danny Haynes was to be denied by the crossbar.

Ipswich made their first change on 71 minutes, Paul Watson the player to make way for Nathan Tooms.

A flurry of substitutions ensued as the game entered the final quarter of an hour with Ipswich bringing Joe Clemo and Jack Ainsley on for Jordan Rhodes and Edward Upson while for the Cobblers Ross Oulton replaced Joe Burnell.

Ross Oulton was booked on 87 minutes for what was deemed to be persistent infringement.

3-0 was the final score but despite the scoreline the young Cobblers side will have gained some invaluable experience having played against their more experienced Ipswich counterparts.
