Northampton Town rattled in the goals as they came up against an Army XI (made up of the double winners of a Servicemans League for UK forces stationed in Germany) in an unofficial behind closed doors friendly played at the club's pre-season training base on the Dutch-German border.

The Cobblers proved far too strong for their opponents and ran in nine goals to secure a convincing 9-0 victory.

The goals began to flow as early as the 7th minute, when Adebayo Akinfenwa scored with a low finish inside the area following a Colin Larkin cross.

Ryan Gilligan doubled the advantage two minutes later having been played through by Akinfenwa, while Larkin made it three on 15 minutes with a flick header at the near post from a Greg Taylor cross.

Liam Davis cut in from the left on 26 minutes before unleashing a driven finish beyond the keeper, while Larkin scored his second and the team's 5th on 29 minutes when he poked home a loose ball in the area.

Ian Sampson had played the first half hour before giving way to Jon Marzetti, but the goals continued to flow.

Greg Taylor made it six on 63 minutes when he volleyed home in a crowded penalty area after the keeper had failed to collect, while it was the turn of Danny Jackman to get on the scoresheet on 74 minutes with a left foot drive that went in off the far post.

Joe Benjamin added the 8th with two minutes to play when he slotted home after cutting in from the right, before Ian Henderson scored from the penalty spot in the final minute after Benjamin had been held back.
