Cobblers boss Ian Sampson is set to welcome striker Steve Guinan back into the matchday squad when Morecambe visit Sixfields on Saturday. Guinan has been missing since early December with a hernia problem.

"Steve Guinan scored a hat-trick for the reserves on Tuesday and he certainly comes into contention for a place in the squad," Sampson confirmed.

"He's not ready to start a game for the first-team yet because he's only been back in training for a week after being out for around three months but we've got another reserve game next week against Colchester and he will play in that.

"The three goals he scored on Tuesday will boost his confidence and they were all good finishes. It's good to have him back and if he keeps scoring goals he will certainly come into contention for a starting place.

"Andy Holt trained on Thursday and Ryan Gilligan is available again. The only players still unavailable are Kevin Thornton, Chris Dunn and John Curtis who should be back in training next week.

"Kevin's injury isn't as bad as first feared but he's gone to see a specialist and hopefully he will be back in a couple of weeks.

"Chris is three weeks into his post-op and I think it'll be another 10 days or so before he starts training again.

"Jason Steele's loan runs out at the end of March but depending on Chris's situation we might look at extending that.

"Luke Guttridge has still got a bit of a problem with his ankle and his toe but we are just going to try and ease him through to the end of the season.

"He'll definitely be in the 18 on Saturday but we will think about whether or not to start him."
