SAMMO - 'LEAGUE 2 HAS CHANGED'

Posted on: Fri 26 Jun 2009

Coach Ian Sampson says Cobblers fans should expect to see a slightly different style of football from League 2 sides this season.

"I think the style of League 2 has changed slightly over the last few years and there are probably less teams now that play long-ball football," he said.

"There are still a few teams who like to play a bit more directly but there are definitely more teams that like to get the ball down and play.

"I watched the play-off semi-final between Bury and Shrewsbury and both teams played some very good football over the two legs.

"We don't want to be blinkered into thinking that every game is going to be long-ball because there will be teams who want to play football and we will be one of them.

"In saying that there will be times when we will need to maybe mix it up a bit and play effective football because ultimately the results are the most important thing.

"If we can get out of the division by playing nice football then that will be fantastic but if we get promoted by mixing it up a bit then in my opinion that's just as good.

"The aim is to get out of this division and we want to do that by playing nice attractive football but there will definitely be times when we will need to fight and scrap and when that happens we need to have that little bit of bite in our team and the desire to win.

"I know the league quite well and to get promoted you need everyone pulling in the right direction. You need a good team ethic, you can have individuals in a team but what you can't have is a team of individuals.

"We will need someone who can produce a bit of magic on occasion but at this level if we can work together as a team then I think we will be okay.

"I think everyone is waiting for something to happen with the stadium re-development and if it happens then that will be fantastic.

"This club needs the stadium re-development to really move forward and if something could happen with that then it would really give everyone the belief that we can go on and progress into a higher division."
