GARETH KINGSTON'S MASTERMIND DIARY - PART THREE

Posted on: Wed 10 Jun 2009

Cobblers season ticket holder Gareth Kingston is appearing on Mastermind on Friday June 12th at 7.30pm on BBC 2. Here is his diary of his visits to the famous black chair; Continued from yesterday...

Having enjoyed reading about the 1958 FA Cup win over Arsenal I've been tackling the yo-yo decade of the 1960s. What a time to have been a Cobblers fan! There is so much to learn about the rise up the divisions and the 1st Division season. So I am trying to spot what might make a good question. For example, Barry Lines was the first person in English football to score in all four divisions for the same club. Chic Brodie was another interesting character. When Chic signed for the Cobblers he became the first person to play for 3 different clubs in 3 different divisions in 3 consecutive games.

I've bought "A Season in the Sun" because I want to make sure that I have nailed the 1960s and especially the First Division season. Even for someone who wasn't alive at the time this book is a cracking read. I highly recommend it. There are some great stories that stand out. My favourite being how when playing Sunderland on a frozen pitch Dave Bowen sent the players out wearing baseball boots. The Cobblers ran out 5-0 winners.

I've been spending some time trying to memorise all of the Cobblers managers. I don't have a great memory for lists, but I think it is pretty important to know these guys. One interesting nugget I have picked up is that Syd Puddefoot and Warney Cresswell (who were the last two managers before the Second World War), were both sold for world record transfer fees as players.

Clarence isn't the only mascot the Cobblers have had. A bulldog, a goat, a black cat, Cobby the Cobbler and Griff the Griffin all preceded our much loved dragon.

26th June
I wish I had seen Frank Large play for the Cobblers. He seems to have been a special player, and his 18 minute hat-trick against Chester is worth remembering.

Oh dear. Graham Taylor suffered his career ending injury against the Cobblers at the County Ground in 1972. The failure to qualify for the 1994 World Cup started in Northampton!

28th June
I'm back to where I started. I was originally going to answer questions on the period from 1985 onwards. Well I am into the 80s and enjoying reading about the Graham Carr era. What a team that Fourth Division Championship side was. Such a shame that we couldn't keep the team together.

Also in the mix was our giant killing of Coventry in 1990. It's worth remembering that we lost to Rochdale in the next round.

to be continued....
