Experienced former Reading and Colchester United midfielder Kevin Watson has joined Northampton Town on trial.

The 34 year old, who has also played for Tottenham, Brentford, Bristol City, Barnet, Swindon and Rotherham has made more than 450 senior appearances, scoring 16 goals.

"I've invited Kevin Watson to train with us for a couple of days and he might feature in the game against QPR on Wednesday night," said boss Stuart Gray.

"He was released by Colchester at the end of last season, he's a good old head who can sit in midfield and these couple of days he's got with us will allow us to have a good look at him and vice versa.

"He's got a decent pedigree and a good playing background but ultimately now the ball is in his court.

"I've always said I've wanted an older head in midfield but whether that will be Kevin or someone else we will have to wait and see.

"I've had no enquiries for any of my players but we are still looking at adding to the squad.

"At this moment in time though if anything happens it will probably be a loan signing. That may happen before August 9th but we may have to be a little bit patient.

"I think the difficulty this season though could be that in the Premier League managers have to name seven substitutes so they might be a bit more reluctant to let players go out on loan.

"I've always said as well that the current rules on loans should be changed so that you can recall a player after two weeks. At the moment you can only recall a player after 28 days and sometimes managers are understandably reluctant to let players go out on loan for that long without a recall option.

"I think we've got a good reputation though for what we did for the loan players we had here last season and that may help us."
