While he was pleased to score his first goal for Northampton Town on Saturday, Adebayo Akinfenwa said it was more important that the team claimed a point to stretch their unbeaten run to 5 games.

"It was my first goal on Saturday for 11 months and as a centre forward it is always nice to score but the most important thing was for us to not lose the game," he said.

"I think that's five games unbeaten now and we want to keep that run going for as long as possible.

"For my goal it was a great ball in from Danny Jackman and I just managed to get to the ball first. I managed to get in front of their centre half and I was obviously just delighted to see the ball go in the back of the net.

"It was a very crowded penalty area for my goal but to be honest that is how I like it. With my shape I always back my upper body strength against whoever is marking me and that is how I scored on Saturday.

"It's been a very stop start season for me and I'm just happy to be playing football again really.

"It was my first game for Northampton on Saturday and it was the first game really where I have felt that I'm nearly back to my old self. I played 90 minutes for the reserves last week which helped but you can't beat playing first team football.

"As a footballer you just want to play games and the more time I can get on the pitch the quicker hopefully I'll get back to full match fitness.

"Our fans were great on Saturday and they were definitely a 12th man for us."
