LARKIN KEEN TO MAKE HIS MARK

Posted on: Wed 04 Jul 2007

New signing Colin Larkin admits he is not a big fan of pre-season, even though he knows it is an important part of any football season.

"I don't really look forward to pre-season. It is the worst part of the year for a footballer," he said as he thought of the 6 weeks of physical work that lay ahead.

"Last season I was relegated with Chesterfield so I just want to get out there and enjoy some success. We had a good cup run last year but things went wrong from Christmas onwards. We fell into a rut and could not get out of it, so it is nice to be down here and ready for a new challenge.

"Although pre-season is hard it is important to get the fitness levels up to see you through. Whatever running you do now goes a long way as the season goes on.

"I am a striker who likes to score goals but I an go out wide if required. I did both roles at Chesterfield last season. Up until Christmas last year it was going well but after Christmas we did not perform as a team.

"Stuart rang me over the summer and what he said stood out above the other offers I had.

"I had a great time at Chesterfield but now I can't wait to get started with this challenge. I know there are a few Irish lads in the squad and I know Fred Murray really well and he is training with us so it is good to see a familiar face.

"I want to get into the team and then score some goals and play well. I think we can be dark horses and can be up the right end of the table.

"I played here close to the end of the season and I was impressed with Northampton. I got a few bruises off Chris Doig that day. He is a big lad and I am happy to be on his side this time!"
