"We are very pleased to have agreed this new contract with Chris," said Cobblers boss Stuart Gray.

"He has been as solid as a rock for us on a consistent basis and has captained the side with distinction. He is a player who would no doubt have attracted interest from elsewhere, possibly from clubs in the Championship and we are delighted he will be staying here.

"He is a winner who will run through the proverbial brick wall for the side and you need characters like that who will lead. He is a big influence in the dressing room and you know what you will get from Chris. At 26 years of age his best years are still ahead of him, but he has a good level of experience with around 200 senior career appearances and he formed a good partnership with whoever was alongside him last season.

"Not only is it important to have a strong spine to your side, it is important to have quality players in general and we have secured a player in Chris for at least the next 2 years who is proven at this level.

"I think Chris likes it here, he is settled and he is obviously happy to extend his stay. As a club, it is a sign of our ambition to provide the best possible team we can to excite and entertain season ticket holders and supporters. We may not always get all of our targets, but we are ambitious and determined to move forward and I want players here who share my ambition to strive for excellence and not settle for anything less. Chris is one of those and I am thrilled.

"I would like to thank the season ticket holders who have already renewed. Their support is a big help to us as we try and attract and re-sign quality players to the club and that in turn will give us the best chance of rewarding them for their support next season."

Season ticket holders who have not renewed are reminded that their seats are held until May 31. Doig joins Mark Bunn, Mark Hughes and Bradley Johnson in signing for the club until June 2009 in the last few months.
