SAMPSON HAS HIGH HOPES

Posted on: Fri 04 May 2007

Cobblers coach Ian Sampson has admitted the Cobblers should be looking at reaching the play offs next season.

"It's been a long tough season with lots of ups and downs and I think we are all quite looking forward to the break," he said.

"We achieved our goal this season by staying in this league but we need to push on again next season and aim for at least the play-offs.

"We have had a decent end to the season and that is something we need to build on next season.

"The players commitment to the cause has been questioned at times this season but they have responded well to that and they've seen us through.

"On a personal level this season has been a fantastic learning curve for me. I enjoyed my short spell in charge and I have learnt a lot from both John Gorman and Stuart Gray. I wouldn't say John and Stuart's management styles are totally different but they have obviously got different ideas on how the game is played like most people have.

"Every player will tell you that they learn different things from different managers and I am no different.

"We are looking forward to the game at Doncaster, I think it will be a decent footballing match, they like to play and they've got a fantastic new stadium and a great playing surface.

"I think there will be a few changes in personnel over the summer and the squad will probably look a little bit different come the start of next season than it did last summer.

"Mark Bunn has been a major plus for us this season and he deserves all the awards and plaudits for his performances this season.

"Bradley Johnson has come on leaps and bounds this season as well but all the players have contributed in their own way and they have done well to keep us in this league.

"The defence have done well, Mark Hughes has been fantastic, he trains the way he plays and it is nice to see that in a defender. Alex Pearce's positional play has been excellent and Chris Doig has been his usual steady reliable self."
