THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT…

Posted on: Mon 10 May 2010

With any column written at the end of the season, the temptation is always to look back, but this year is an exception that rule.

The post-Christmas form, the last six games aside, has been excellent. Had it been extrapolated over a 46-game season then the trophy cabinet would be getting a dusting down now in anticipation of the league title being put in it.

Something clicked in the team and nobody really knows what it was but if the manager and his assistant can figure it out then next season promises to be a good one.

There is still a chance this team will finish in the play-offs and if they do, then you have to say that is a magnificent achievement considering all the talk was about a relegation dogfight not so long ago.

It's easy to say the side depends too much on one player but what sides these days do not? Manchester United are a different team when Wayne Rooney plays, and Arsenal might have won the league if they'd had Robin van Persie fit for anything like an extended period.

I'm not sure that argument really stands up, anyway. In most of the games during the good run, it was the defence that was as much a focal point of the team as the big man up top, and the return to Abdul Osman to central midfield was also a huge factor.

Most of the current team are under contractual wraps for next season, and although a few are not, there is still enough to convince me that it could be a very good year.
What happens this summer will be crucial, because a couple of key players are not coming back (John Johnson, for example), and this will be a good test of the management team's nous in the transfer market.

Have a good summer…
