There were two debutants at Sixfields in this Johnstone's Paint Trophy second round match. While Ian Sampson took his seat in the dug out for the first time as Northampton Town's permanent manager, he handed youth team midfielder Michael Jacobs his first senior start.

On a foul, wet evening, an early loose back pass from Ben Marshall gave Alan Connell sight of goal. He was forced wide by Chris Dunn, and that gave the Cobblers time to get defenders back, allowing Craig Hinton to clear behind for a corner.

A delightful 14th minute cross from Michael Jacobs just eluded Ben Marshall and Steve Guinan at the far post, before Josh McQuoid fired over after a positive run for the Cherries.

Steve Guinan had a 27th minute shot blocked by Ryan Garry, while the Cobblers striker chipped inches beyond the far post from the resulting corner.

The visitors took the lead in the 33rd minute. A deep free kick was played back across goal for Cherries skipper Danny Hollands to fire home.

Ian Sampson made a change at half time with Billy McKay replacing Gary Mulligan.

A dipping 47th minute volley from Ryan Gilligan forced a sprawling save from Dan Thomas in the Cherries goal, while Ben Marshall shot over with a drive from the edge of the area.

Thomas was in the right place to hold a curling effort from Michael Jacobs on 54 minutes, before Courtney Herbert came on for Ben Marshall in the Cobblers second change.

The Cobblers were level on 66 minutes with a goal that was almost identical to John Johnson's late equaliser against Bradford City. Ryan Gilligan swung over the free kick from the same spot and this time it was Steve Guinan who headed home.

A long clearance from Chris Dunn caused a 69th minute problem for the Cherries defence, and after they failed to deal Billy McKay squared for Courtney Herbert but his finish was just off target.

Jason Tindall was booked after catching Paul Rodgers. That was the Bournemouth man's last action and he was replaced by George Webb. Danny Ings then came on for Josh McQuoid while for the Cobblers Abdul Osman was introduced for Alex Dyer.

Eddie Howe's last change was Jayden Stockley on for Warren Cummings, while McKay flashed a shot wide after cutting in from the right hand side.

Herbert latched onto an 83rd minute flick from Steve Guinan and held off his defender before being denied by a smart save from Thomas.

The Cherries were awarded a penalty in the 86th minute when Chris McCready went to ground in the penalty area and was adjudged to have handled. Ryan Gilligan was booked for his protests but it did not matter as Chris Dunn saved Lee Bradbury's spot kick.

The Cobblers were awarded a penalty of their own in stoppage time. Courtney Herbert chased a high, bouncing ball into the area and was bundled over, meaning the referee pointed to the spot. Ryan Gilligan scored from 12 yards to ensure the Cobblers passage into the next round.
