Ian Sampson welcomed Adebayo Akinfenwa back into his side for the trip to Dagenham & Redbridge. Courtney Herbert made way in the only change to the side that had drawn with Burton Albion in the previous game.
The Cobblers were backed by a large following in East London, and they had the better of the early exchanges with half chances falling to Akinfenwa, Luke Guttridge, Dean Beckwith and Billy McKay. The first clearcut sight of goal came on the half hour, Andy Holt meeting a Guttridge cross but seeing his far post header saved by Tony Roberts.
Jon Nurse headed beyond the target for the Daggers on 33 minutes, while six minutes later Akinfenwa led a Cobblers break from a Dagenham free kick. He found strike partner Billy McKay who curled narrowly over.
A minute before the break a Peter Gilbert corner caused confusion in the Dagenham area but the home side were able to scramble the ball clear and ensure the two sides went into the break level.
A delightful ball from Luke Guttridge released Andy Holt three minutes into the second half but his half volley went over the angle of post and bar.
A 63rd minute free kick from Gilbert was flicked on by Beckwith for Akinfenwa and his poked effort beat Roberts but landed on the roof of the net. The first change of the afternoon then followed, Josh Scott replacing Wesley Thomas for the home side.
Jon Nurse shot just over for the Daggers moments later before both Dean Beckwith and Peter Gain were booked after the Dagenham midfielder reacted angrily to a challenge from the Cobblers defender.
Chris Dunn tipped a Damien McCrory effort round the post on 68 minutes, as Danny Green came on for Darren Currie.
The Cobblers had the lead on 71 minutes. Abdul Osman did well to keep possession on the right and he played a ball inside to John Johnson. Johnson cut in before unleashing an unstoppable effort beyond Roberts and into the top corner. Before the game could re-start, Kevin Thornton replaced McKay.
Peter Gain struck a dipping 76th minute volley that Chris Dunn did brilliantly to push onto the roof of the net. The Daggers last change was Phil Walsh on for Jon Nurse. For the Cobblers Paul Rodgers replaced the limping Andy Holt.
The home side continued to push forward looking for an equaliser but they could not find a way through and the Cobblers recorded their latest away victory.
