Stuart Gray handed a full debut to new loan signing Kyle Walker as Northampton Town welcomed Oldham Athletic to Sixfields for their first home game for a month. Karl Hawley also returned to the side having missed the FA Cup tie at Leeds, while Alex Dyer replaced the suspended Giles Coke. The fit again Luke Guttridge was among the substitutes.

After a pre-match tribute to the late Mr Con Wilson, debutant Kyle Walker received a yellow card on 6 minutes after catching Chris Taylor. In a stop-start beginning, the Latics were forced in to an early change with Andy Liddell replacing the limping Deane Smalley.

Frank Fielding went down low to save a shot from Lee Hughes on 12 minutes, while at the other end Mark Crossley had to dive smartly to his right to deny Alex Dyer after Andy Holt had headed Walker's deep cross back across the face of goal.

Ryan Gilligan fired over the bar on 17 minutes after the Oldham defence had struggled to clear a free kick, before Chris Taylor ended a surging run into the Cobblers area by having his shot deflected behind by Mark Hughes.

Jason Crowe drove over the bar after 35 minutes, before Lee Hughes was booked for kicking the ball into the crowd after a decision had gone against him.

Ryan Gilligan was denied a penalty in first half stoppage time after he had his shirt pulled by Reuben Hazell, while Lee Hughes struck the post with a shot on the turn as the first half ended goalless.

Byfield headed over for the visitors in the opening moments of the second half, before Stuart Gray made a double change, bringing Scott McGleish and Nicholas Bignall on for Karl Hawley and Alex Dyer.

Fielding did well to push Byfield's 59th minute volley around the post, before Oldham's on-loan striker was booked after catching Gilligan.

Luke Guttridge came on for Dolman on 71 minutes in the Cobblers final substitution, while moments later Leon Constantine brought down a Scott McGleish flick but could not quite find the finish.

The visitors were awarded a penalty on 75 minutes after the referee ruled that Lee Hughes had been fouled in the area, Andy Liddell scoring from the spot.

Hughes, who had already been booked, escaped further punishment after flattening Jason Crowe, before Nicholas Bignall was denied by a covering block from Daniel Jones.

Frank Fielding went forward for a late corner before Lee Hughes was sent off in injury time after fouling Kyle Walker, although the Oldham striker took an age to leave the field.

Oldham made a change with Sean Gregan replacing Liddell, but that was the last action of note and the Cobblers suffered only their second home defeat of 2008 - both of them to penalties.
