Stuart Gray named an unchanged side for this re-arranged visit of Colchester United in Coca-Cola League One on a freezing cold late November afternoon.

Chris Coyne headed an early corner over the bar as the visitors had the first attempt at goal, while for the Cobblers Liam Davis fired a shot too high after a Luke Guttridge corner had been half cleared.

A Scott McGleish flick released Ryan Gilligan away on 15 minutes, Gilligan fed Leon Constantine but the angle forced the striker slightly wide, and his cross was cleared away by the Colchester defence.

The visitors had the lead on 23 minutes. The referee awarded a free kick against Jason Crowe in the centre of the field and after it had been taken quickly, Dean Hammond delivered a right wing cross that Clive Platt headed home.

That lead was doubled a few minutes later when a right wing corner was headed home at the near post in a crowd of players by Paul Reid.

Luke Guttridge was booked after a foul on Dean Hammond on 33 minutes, before Andy Todd volleyed over the bar at the far post following a Danny Jackman corner.

Liam Davis forced a save out of Jimmy Walker, before Ryan Gilligan shot into the side netting from a Giles Coke cross.

Danny Jackman did well to make his way into the Colchester area in first half stoppage time, but Scott McGleish sidefooted wide from his low cross.

Stuart Gray made a change at half time with Nicholas Bignall replacing Guttridge.

Giles Coke was booked after a foul on David Perkins, before Danny Jackman pulled a goal back. Liam Davis was fouled 30 yards from goal and Jackman fired in a direct free kick that beat Walker with the help of a deflection.

Johnnie Jackson shot wide for Colchester soon afterwards when through on goal, while for the Cobblers, Nicholas Bignall arrowed a drive wide of the far post after a mazy run.

Pat Baldwin was booked after a trip on Liam Davis, before the second Cobblers change saw Andy Holt coming on for Ryan Gilligan. Stuart Gray's final swap saw Ian Henderson replace Scott McGleish.

A change for Colchester was Kemal Izzet for Mark Yeates.

Andy Holt headed just over the bar after a Danny Jackman free kick had been blocked, while Liam Davis volleyed wide from a Jackman cross.

Clive Platt was booked on 80 minutes for kicking the ball away, while Jermaine Easter was cautioned for the same offence moments later.

Leon Constantine curled a shot onto the roof of the net on 85 minutes, before Scott Vernon replaced Platt.

Andy Holt then drove narrowly wide from the edge of the area, while Davis headed just past the post as the game entered stoppage time.

The Cobblers had turned in a much improved second half performance, but they slipped to defeat thanks to those first half goals.
