Northampton Town and Walsall met at Sixfields for the second successive Saturday, this time in the 2nd round of the FA Cup. Stuart Gray made 2 changes to the side beaten 2-0 in the previous fixture, with Liam Dolman and Ryan Gilligan coming in for Joe Burnell and Guy Branston.
The visitors had not been beaten away from home since September 1, and they had the lead after just 4 minutes, Tommy Mooney finishing low beyond Mark Bunn from just inside the area.
Mark Hughes saw his 7th minute header from Andy Holt's long throw held by Clayton Ince, but moments later the Cobblers were level, Andy Kirk firing home from 12 yards after Poul Hubertz had flicked on Andy Holt's left wing cross.
Kirk then volleyed wide from the edge of the area after Jason Crowe's throw in had only been half cleared by Anthony Gerrard, before the Cobblers goalscorer became the first player booked when he tripped Demontagnac. Demontagnac was himself then cautioned for catching Bradley Johnson.
Mark Bunn produced a terrific 30th minute save to tip a 25 yard drive from Darren Wrack onto the post, the keeper being first to claim the loose ball. In the next passage of play Tommy Mooney was booked for dissent after disputing the award of a free kick.
Bradley Johnson and Andy Kirk were both close to scoring in a 44th minute move that ended with Kirk sending the ball just wide of the far post as the two sides left the field level at half time.
The first change of the game came on 54 minutes and saw Paul Hall replace Edrissa Sonko. Alex Nicholls then came on for Demontagnac.
Hall fired wide on 63 minutes after cutting in from the left, before Ian Henderson came on in place of Poul Hubertz in the Cobblers first swap. Soon afterwards Daniel Jones replaced Jason Crowe.
From a 72nd minute corner, Anthony Gerrard headed a knock back from Mooney over the bar, before Andy Kirk headed a cross from Andy Holt just wide of the far post.
A melee broke out after Rhys Weston had clattered into Daniel Jones on 85 minutes - both were booked.
The final Cobblers substitution saw Joe Burnell replace Larkin. There were no further chances and the two sides will have to meet again to settle this tie.
