Stuart Gray made two changes to the Northampton Town side that travelled north to Huddersfield Town for their final game of 2007. Brett Johnson and Ryan Gilligan were named in the starting XI at the expense of Danny Jackman and Dean Bowditch. Injury ruled out Chris Doig, Andy Holt, Giles Coke and Ian Henderson.
On a cold, wet and windy afternoon in West Yorkshire, the Cobblers had the first effort at goal, Matt Glennon tipping a 7th minute Brett Johnson header over the bar from a Daniel Jones free kick.
With the torrential rain continuing to sweep down, Andy Booth sent a shot on the turn wide from Malvin Kamara's cross on 11 minutes for the home side.
Nathan Clarke was then booked after a late foul on Ryan Gilligan in the first caution of the game.
On 25 minutes Andy Kirk was denied by a brave block from Robbie Williams as the Cobblers striker looked to convert following a goalmouth scramble from a Jones corner, while for the Terriers on-loan striker Phil Jevons headed wide from a Kamara cross at the other end of the field.
Twice in a matter of moments the home side came close just after the half hour mark, firstly Liam Dolman made a superb last ditch tackle to deny Jevons, and as the ball was half cleared, Mark Bunn beat away a 20 yard drive from Robbie Williams.
Frank Sinclair was very lucky to stay on the field when he was only booked for hauling down Poul Hubertz as the Cobblers striker looked to break clear of the Terriers defence on 41 minutes.
Despite the fourth official only signalling one added minute at the end of the first half, the home side took the lead well into the 2nd minute of stoppage time, Andy Booth heading home at the far post from an Andy Holdsworth cross.
A neat Cobblers move at the start of the second half saw Jason Crowe's cross find Bradley Johnson but the midfielder's header was too high before Ryan Gilligan was booked for a foul on Williams half way inside the Cobblers own half.
Andy Kirk's shot on the turn was held by Glennon on 53 minutes, while two minutes later Andy Booth shot wide from 18 yards for Huddersfield.
Stuart Gray introduced Colin Larkin for Ryan Gilligan in his first change but moments later the Cobblers were left wondering just how they had not equalised. Jason Crowe burst into the Huddersfield area one on one with Glennon and his effort was blocked by the feet of the keeper. The rebound fell back to Crowe who hit the bar with his follow up, before Danny Schofield recovered to clear the ball off the line.
The Cobblers went close again when Bradley Johnson's 20 yard shot was deflected wide, but the equaliser arrived from the resulting corner. Brett Johnson rose highest at the far post to head towards goal, the ball being touched in on the line by Poul Hubertz.
Jonathan Worthington replaced Danny Schofield as Andy Ritchie made his first swap, before Daniel Jones was booked for pulling back Kamara.
The Cobblers had the lead with 5 minutes to play, Poul Hubertz supplying a low cross that Jason Crowe converted from close range at the far post.
Danny Jackman replaced Hubertz as the game entered stoppage time, and although the home side won a late corner, the Cobblers did a professional job of seeing the game out to record an excellent victory - the first ever success at the Galpharm Stadium.
