Northampton Town welcomed high flying Carlisle United to Sixfields. Stuart Gray made three changes to the side beaten at Swansea City in midweek with Daniel Jones, Andy Holt and Dean Bowditch replacing Guy Branston, Colin Larkin and Ryan Gilligan.
On a wet, cold and dark December afternoon, the Cobblers had the first opportunity on 6 minutes. A break down the right from Ian Henderson fed Danny Jackman and he had the composure to lay a pass back to Bradley Johnson who saw his effort from 8 yards blocked by a recovering defender.
Carlisle came forward on 13 minutes and after Danny Jackman had done well to deny Joe Anyinsah, the full back's clearance was only as far as Marc Bridge-Wilkinson who saw his effort tipped away by Mark Bunn at close range.
Liam Dolman tested Keiren Westwood with a 35 yard drive in the 15th minute that the Carlisle keeper got behind, while at the other end Bridge-Wilkinson curled a free kick over the bar.
A well worked short corner routine on 22 minutes saw Mark Hughes send Danny Jackman's delivery back across goal where Liam Dolman steered his header inches over the bar.
Dolman was then booked after catching Simon Hackney on a Carlisle break, and from the resulting free kick Marc Bridge-Wilkinson curled home to give the visitors the lead against the run of play.
The Cobblers were back level within a matter of minutes. Dean Bowditch constructed an attack down the right hand side and fed Jason Crowe in space, and he drove a low shot in beyond Westwood.
The Carlisle keeper, who was not having the best of afternoons, then nearly dropped an Ian Henderson free kick in to the net, grabbing the ball at the second attempt.
Zigor Aranalde was booked for hauling down Ian Henderson and then arguing about the decision and as the half time whistle went, the Cobblers could count themselves unfortunate to only be level.
Danny Carlton was booked for kicking the ball away 3 minutes after the re-start, but after the hour mark Carlisle regained the lead in the most controversial of fashions. Mark Bunn had collected a Zigor Aranalde free kick in both hands before the ball was barged away from his grasp, allowing Joe Garner to fire into an empty net. Bunn was booked for his protests.
A double change from Stuart Gray saw Ryan Gilligan and Poul Hubertz replace Ian Henderson and Danny Jackman. For Carlisle, Paul Thirlwell came on for Simon Hackney.
Richard Keogh drove just wide of the target after the Cobblers defence had half cleared a 73rd minute corner, before Mark Hughes and Chris Lumsdon were both booked. Hughes for a foul, Lumsdon for his reaction.
Andy Kirk's 78th minute shot on the turn was held by Westwood as Kevin Gall replaced Danny Carlton for the visitors.
The Carlisle keeper made amends for his earlier errors when he somehow clawed a Ryan Gilligan drive away on 83 minutes, and from the resulting corner Poul Hubertz saw his header cleared off the line.
Danny Graham came on for Garner in Carlisle's final change, before Joe Burnell replaced Andy Kirk.
Liam Dolman then headed a Daniel Jones corner just wide of the far post, while at the other end Mark Bunn saved well from Danny Graham.
Marc Bridge-Wilkinson was booked for time wasting, before the equaliser the Cobblers so deserved came in injury time, Bradley Johnson driving beyond Westwood after Hubertz and Bowditch had teamed up to lay the ball back into his path.
