GRAY PRAISES EFFORT AND COMMITMENT

Posted on: Mon 11 Feb 2008

Stuart Gray praised his players after Saturday's 1-1 draw with Leeds United.

"I felt our effort and the commitment that the players showed deserved something out of the game," he said.

"I was disappointed with the goal we conceded but it was a great response to that set back from the players. We matched a very good side and when you play good teams you have to match their work ethic.

"An end product was the only thing missing from much of our play. We didn't get too much of a break in the final third of the pitch and we perhaps did not win enough second balls. We just needed someone to pick one of those balls up as it dropped and make something happen.

"Leeds played to the strength of their strikers but I thought we defended well and apart from the goal they did not create an awful lot, especially in the second half.

"The midfield was very congested and we had to fight and scrap but we did that and I felt we could have got a winner from some of the set plays we had late on.

"Bayo has had a very good week. It was a simple goal, and credit must go to Giles Coke, Jonathan Hayes, Poul Hubertz and Bayo for that move. Bayo is an impact player. He got his goal last week and did the same today. He is different and he is an option. He upsets defenders and draws people on to him and puts himself about.

"I think Bayo is around 75 per cent fit at the moment. I don't think he is quite fit enough to start yet, certainly not at the tempo I want us to play. At the moment I think he is best coming on for the last 20 to 30 minutes. He is making great progress and I am very pleased for him.

"Gabor Gyepes is progressing well and he is ready, but the lads at the back are doing very well and he is having to be patient. He has won plenty of caps for Hungary and that shows how good a player we have waiting in the wings.

"The atmosphere was great and I hope those fans will be back. I am sure they could see the effort and commitment and what we are trying to do. I thought we could have sneaked a winner at the end but all in all it was a good day and there is plenty for us to be pleased about."
