GRAY DISAPPOINTED BY ELLAND ROAD REVERSE

Posted on: Sat 05 Jan 2008

Stuart Gray felt his team's inability to keep possession was a big factor in the 3-0 defeat at Leeds United.

"We wanted to try and frustrate Leeds and I think for a time in the first half we did that but when we did have the ball we just gave it away far too cheaply," he said.

"I was very disappointed with the goal we conceded just before half-time because we had good possession of the ball but gave it away needlessly.

"The timing of the goals was disappointing and when we conceded a second at the start of the second half we were then just chasing the game.

"One or two of our players had a poor game on the ball and that meant we were just constantly trying to get the ball back.

"If you don't do the basics right by keeping the ball you are going to put yourself under pressure and that makes it difficult for the defence to get any sort of a breather.

"I think Poul Hubertz and Daniel Jones were both a big loss for us but the pleasing thing is that we manage to get Giles Coke on for half an hour and that can only benefit him. We've got a reserve game at Southend on Monday and hopefully Giles will get 90 minutes in that.

"We are down to the minimum in terms of numbers but I thought Giles did OK and for a spell in the second half we did have a bit of ball retention.

"As I've said to the players, possession is only an advantage if you make use of the ball and unfortunately we couldn't do that because we just kept conceding possession to Leeds far too cheaply.

"We've agreed a fee with Leeds for Bradley Johnson and like I've said before ultimately it's Bradley who will have the final say.

"Talks are ongoing at the moment and I'd imagine something might be done next week. These things can drag on but I think the only stumbling block at the moment is personal terms.

"We have got a small squad but I've said to the players that the last thing I want is for anyone to be in a comfort zone. I need players competing for places and hopefully next week we will be able to add one or two players to the squad.

"I need to freshen the squad up a little bit and I've made some calls but I will only bring players to this football club that are better than the ones we've got here already."
