FOOTBALL LEAGUE PODCAST - EPISODE 24

Posted on: Thu 14 Jan 2010

The Coca-Cola Football League podcast is available to download now.

Host Mark Clemmit's marquee name this week is new Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine, who spent just 10 days out of work after leaving Preston North End.

Irvine is looking forward to making his mark at Hillsborough - and has promised striker Francis Jeffers a chance to impress.

Ex-Arsenal and Everton forward Jeffers had been out of the Wednesday side recently.

Irvine said: "He is a natural finisher, everyone knows that.

"I worked with him when I was at Everton. If you give him chances he will score goals. We need people who will score goals at the moment.

"Like everyone else, Franny starts with a clean slate and he's competing with every other player here."

Irvine added: "With work and determination I hope we can get up the table to safety."

Snow is still playing havoc with the fixture list and Clemmit speaks to Graham Fordy, Managing Director of League Two side Darlington, who have not played a home game since December 12.

Fordy said: "There is a fitness issue, but fortunately we have a good relationship with Middlesbrough and have been able to use their facilities.

"Having said that, the break may turn out to be a good thing for us because we were going through a torrid time!"

Barnet Sports Development Director Paul Fairclough joins Clem in the studio and speaks about the Bees' new training centre.

Fairclough hopes the centre in north London will revitalise the club's Academy, which was disbanded when they were relegated out of the Football League nine years ago.

He said: "We haven't had organic growth for years. But now we have this facility which is breathtaking. We have up to 10 pitches and two floodlit state-of-the-art pitches.

"This is the way ahead for a club like Barnet."
