FOOTBALL LEAGUE PODCAST - EPISODE 23

Posted on: Thu 07 Jan 2010

The Coca-Cola Football League podcast is now available to download.

Bristol City Manager Gary Johnson - the sixth-longest serving manager in the Football League - talks about his time at Ashton Gate.

Johnson said: "It was important to me to go somewhere that had long-term ambitions, where it wasn't a peaks and troughs club.

"In my first season we kept the team in League 1. It was at the bottom when I joined. You have to have a bit of success, but the most important thing is to have a strong Chairman.

"My Chairman has high hopes for the club but they are realistic. He knows the time scale and, hopefully, we can get there."

Swindon Town striker Charlie Austin - who until last summer was playing for Poole Town, five divisions below the Football League - reflects on a rapid rise.

Austin, with seven goals for the Robins, said: "I was training for Bournemouth and hoped to sign for them, then it all fell through and I thought my chance had gone.

"I just thought 'here we go, I'll just watch that standard of football on TV rather than play it'.

"I can't believe how I have taken to League football. Things have just fallen into place.

"We have a great spirit at the club and we are going really well. If we can get the wins we deserve we should be right in the mix for the Play-Offs."

Ex-Oldham Athletic and Huddersfield Town Manager Andy Ritchie was supposed to join host Mark Clemmit in the studio but was snowed in - although he did manage to get to a phone.

Ritchie explained the problems that managers face when games are cancelled due to adverse weather.

He said: "It's going to get very congested and some managers will have a real headache.

"When I was at Oldham there was just nowhere to train. All you could do was get a good workout and a five-a-side going."
