Northampton Town signed former Everton central defender Mark Hughes for an undisclosed fee in January 2007. Merseyside-born 6ft 1in Mark had been at Goodison Park from a young age. After progressing through the youth academy, he has established himself as the regular captain of the Toffees reserves. A composed centre-half who is comfortable bringing the ball out of defence, Hughes is also a regular goalscorer from both the penalty spot and in open play. After making it into the Blues senior squad at the beginning of the 2005-06 season, he spent a month on loan with Stockport County. Hughes got close to a full debut for Everton as he sat on the substitutes' bench for the FA Cup 4th Round tie against Chelsea before in May 2006 he was offered and signed a new contract. Hughes eventually got his senior debut in the second round League Cup tie at Peterborough in September 2006.
