HOME WIN FOR THE FANS TEAM

Posted on: Thu 23 Oct 2008

Cambridge made their first ever trip to the Racecourse prior to the Yeovil fixture on 18th October. The sides have met on plenty of occasions at the Annual Cambridge Fans Tournament staged every August, but this was the first eleven a side game.

Unseasonal sunshine greeted the kick off with a good scattering of supporters on the touchline making the most of the nice weather. The home side took early charge and created a series of good openings, the pick of the bunch coming from Nick Randall who hit the post from an acute angle.

The goal arrived on fifteen minutes thanks to a neat move, Rob Ellam's searching pass to the right wing found Mark Kennedy, who split two defenders with a through ball to Richard Fletcher. The forward took one touch and applied a composed finish beyond the Cambridge keeper.

The Shoemakers continued to dominate and doubled the lead ten minutes later. Ian Errington picked up the ball inside his own half and ran under pressure from three Cambridge players. After great work in the corner, he crossed to Richard Fletcher and his first time volley beat the keeper from ten yards.

The second half was a similar story to the first with the home side creating chance after chance. Mark Kennedy and Martin Holmes forced good saves from the keeper and Nick Randall thought he'd squeezed the ball past the Cambridge stopper, but was denied by an outstretched hand.

Holmes did make it 3-0, finishing from close range after great work from Nick Randall. Mark Kennedy almost added a fourth, but his low shot hit the inside of the post and fell kindly into the keeper's arms. Martin Holmes also headed narrowly wide, but no further goals arrived.

Richard French from Cambridge commented after the game, "Thanks very much for the game, it was a decent match and everyone enjoyed it. Although we lost it was certainly better than being torn to pieces by Millwall a couple of weeks ago. Hope you see you all again soon and good luck to Northampton for the rest of the season."
