Northampton Town travelled to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the first round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.

Ivan Toney, Ian Morris and Evan Horwood all came into the Cobblers side, replacing Darren Carter (hamstring), Chris Hackett (Achilles) and Marc Richards. Ex-Cobbler Michael Jacobs started for Wolves.

Torrential rain greeted the players as they came out of the tunnel with thunder rumbling round Molineux as the game got underway.

A curled shot from Jacobs deflected just wide on 17 minutes and from the following corner Matt Doherty saw a drilled effort well saved by Matt Duke diving to his right. Wolves then thought they had taken the lead on 28 minutes only for Leon Clarke’s header to be ruled out for off-side.

It was a case of Déjà Vu for the home side on 35 minutes when Clarke again had a goal disallowed for off-side and just a matter of seconds later Wolves again had the ball in the back of the net only for the linesman to once again raise his flag.

Ivan Toney saw a shot deflected just wide while Ricky Ravenhill also came close for the Cobblers before half time but the home keeper was behind his powerful effort.

The Cobblers had the first chance of the second half, John-Joe O’Toole’s shot saved by Aaron McCarey after Ivan Toney had done well to flick on a cross from Daniel Alfei. Ian Morris then fizzed a shot just wide as Town enjoyed a spell of pressure.

That pressure told on 58 minutes as the Cobblers took the lead, substitute Lawson D’Ath, who had only been on the field for three minutes, finishing at the second attempt following a cute flick on from Toney.

Five minutes later and the Cobblers lead was doubled, Ivan Toney heading home from a Kaid Mohamed corner.

Wolves quickly fought back however as two goals in just 99 seconds from Nouha Dicko and Samuel Ricketts levelled the game up again at 2-2.

As the goalfest continued, the Cobblers lead was restored on 74 minutes, Lawson D’Ath with a looping header over Aaron McCarey.

Another fizzer from Morris looked to have clip the top of the crossbar on 87 minutes as the Cobblers continued to be positive in possession.

Five minutes of stoppage time then passed without any major drama as the Cobblers ensured yet another League Cup upset, knocking out their Championship opposition.
