Despite some heavy overnight rain in Torquay the game was given the go ahead following a 3pm pitch inspection at Plainmoor.

Gregor Robertson, making his debut, replaced skipper Lee Collins (foot) in the one enforced changed to the starting line-up. Striker John Marquis, signed on loan from Millwall the day before the game, was named on the bench.

Emile Sinclair fired the Cobblers in front on 10 minutes, the striker scoring from an acute angle after latching on to an inch-perfect through ball.

It was soon 2-0, Sinclair with another terrific finish following a pass from his strike partner Alan Connell.

Having been relatively untroubled in the first half Matt Duke was called upon on 42 minutes, the Cobblers goalkeeper getting across well to tip away a shot from Gulls substitute Jordan Chapell.

The home side pulled a goal back from a corner as the first half entered stoppage time, Krystian Pearce with a close range volley.

Leon McSweeney put in a good block to deny Chapell a shooting opportunity on 53 minutes as the hosts enjoyed a short spell of pressure on the Town goal.

John Marquis replaced Sinclair on 58 minutes with former Cobblers loanee Karl Hawley coming on for Torquay.

Hawley flashed a header wide on 73 minutes as Antonio German came on for Alan Connell. In the Cobblers final change, Ben Tozer replaced Brennan Dickenson.

Joss Labadie had a shot saved by Duke late on before the Cobblers saw out five minutes of injury time to claim a vital three points.
