Northampton Town continued their pre-season campaign on Saturday with a trip to Fernie Fields to take on Sileby Rangers.

Two of the Cobblers summer signings John-Joe O’Toole and Kaid Mohamed both started the game with Alex Nicholls in the squad following a 20-month injury lay-off.

On a warm and humid afternoon, Evan Horwood fired an early shot over the bar. Emile Sinclair played in David Moyo on 17 minutes but despite Moyo appearing to be brought down in the box by the Sileby keeper the referee said no penalty.

Lee Collins headed the Cobblers in front midway through the first half, the defender rising well to head home from a corner.

Town’s lead was doubled just before half-time, Ivan Toney with a dipping cross shot that beat the Sileby keeper at the far post.

John-Joe O’Toole made it 3-0 with a neat side-footed finish on 51 minutes, Chris Hackett providing the cross following some good work from Daniel Alfei.

Alex Nicholls then joined the action with the striker given a standing ovation as he came on to the field.

O’Toole then grabbed another on 59 minutes, chesting the ball home after an initial shot from Nicholls had been blocked.

It was soon five with O’Toole completing his hat-trick, the summer arrival from Bristol Rovers tapping the ball home from close range after the Sileby defence failed to clear.

Alex Nicholls kept his cool to score on 75 minutes, the striker running onto a through ball before calmly slotting the ball home after rounding the Sileby keeper. It was a composed finish from the striker with his goal met by a terrific round of applause from the crowd.

Hackett made it 7-0 with a low strike from the edge of the area before Nicholls added his second and the team’s 8th, the returnee scoring from close range after Sam Warburton’s initial effort had been tipped on to the post.

Nicholls then completed his hat-trick on 86 minutes with a low shot past the Sileby keeper. That was the last of the goals as the game ended Sileby 0 Cobblers 9.
