Rob Page took charge of the team for the first time as Northampton Town kicked off their pre-season campaign at local side Sileby Rangers.

Summer signings David Cornell, Raheem Hanley, Jak McCourt and Alex Revell all started the game with a different eleven fielded in each half.

Academy graduate Shaun McWilliams, handed a pro contract in May, was another notable name on the team sheet while having picked up a minor ankle injury in training, a decision was made not to risk goalkeeper Adam Smith.

Sam Hoskins had an early effort tipped behind by Kris Bartle and it wasn’t long before the deadlock was broken by Alex Revell, who tapped home having chased down a throughball from academy player Jamie Hall, Revell reacting quickly after the Sileby keeper failed to clear the danger.

Lawson D’Ath crossed for Hoskins who fired just wide as the Cobblers looked for a quick second. Hoskins was again denied by Bartle following another throughball from Hall. Revell then found the side netting as the first half drew to a close.

Gabriel Zakuani and Aaron Phillips came on for the second half along with academy players James Goff and Joe Iaciofano, who was soon involved in the action, setting up John-Joe O’Toole who slotted home the Cobblers second.

Iaciofano had a shot saved while Alfie Potter saw an effort cleared off the line as the Cobblers continued to create chances. Marc Richards rose well to connect with a cross from Potter but his header was saved.

Goff tipped a Sileby shot round the post to keep the scoreline at 2-0 and the Cobblers increased their lead on 74 minutes, David Buchanan firing home after some neat build up play on the edge of the box.

The Sileby keeper made another good save to keep out Richards header from a Joel Byrom free kick as a good first work out in pre-season ended in a 3-0 scoreline for Rob Page’s side.
