Northampton Town made the short trip to Fernie Fields to take on Sileby Rangers in their first pre-season friendly.

On a scorching hot afternoon boss Aidy Boothroyd named five trialists in his starting eleven, including former Birmingham City defender Darren Purse and ex-Nottingham Forest striker Mickael Antoine-Curier.

The Cobblers went close to opening the scoring on 13 minutes when following a ball forward from David Moyo a flicked header from JJ Hooper came back off the crossbar.

Antoine-Curier saw a shot pushed away on 34 minutes with Hooper firing over from the rebound. Lee Collins then fired a low shot into the side netting.

JJ Hooper gave the Cobblers the lead just before half-time latching onto a ball forward before getting the better of the bounce to beat the Sileby goalkeeper and slot home.

Aidy Boothroyd made a plethora of changes to the side for the second half with Ian Morris amongst the players to come on.

Hooper doubled Town’s lead on 49 minutes, Lewis Hornby providing the cross following a good ball from Morris.

Hooper then completed his hat-trick after getting on the end of a low cross from Roy O’Donovan to make it 3-0.

Morris fired a shot over the bar from 20-yards before Lateef Elford-Alliyu (trialist) made it 4-0 from close range after Ben Tozer and O’Donovan had both had efforts blocked by the Sileby keeper.

As the Cobblers changes continued, O’Donovan went close with a fierce drive.

Ian Morris made it 5-0 with a header on 86 minutes before Ryan Ansell pulled a goal back for Sileby.
