After a few days away in Scotland, Northampton Town returned to Sixfields on Tuesday night to take on League One side and FA Cup semi finalists Sheffield United in their first home pre-season friendly.

Kaid Mohamed had the Cobblers first effort on goal with his powerful shot deflected just wide.

It was the Blades who took the lead on 27 minutes, Andy Butler getting on the end of a Ben Davies free-kick to glance the ball home.

Marc Richards equalised for the Cobblers from the penalty spot on 58 minutes, Richards himself winning the penalty after being held back by the Blades goalkeeper.

With Sheffield United having changed virtually their whole team during the second half Cobblers boss Chris Wilder made a triple change of his own on 69 minutes, Evan Horwood, Emile Sinclair and Ben Tozer coming on for Gregor Robertson, Ricky Ravenhill and John-Joe O’Toole.

Alex Nicholls then joined the action for the last quarter of an hour with Chris Hackett making way. It was the first time Nicholls had graced the Sixfields surface since his leg-break back in late 2012.

There was to be no dream winner for Nicholls or the Cobblers though as the game finished 1-1.
