After two weeks without a game new signings Luke Prosser and Danny Rose had to make do with a place on the bench as Chris Wilder named an unchanged side for the visit of York City.

At a windswept Sixfields Adam Smith made an early save before on the follow-up a clearance from Lee Martin denied York an opening goal.

The Cobblers grew into the game as the first half progressed and they had the lead on 21 minutes, John-Joe O’Toole perfectly positioned to deftly turn in a Martin corner.

Zander Diamond had to be substituted following a blow to the head, Ryan Cresswell his 37th-minute replacement. Marc Richards then went close to making it 2-0, his header just inches wide.

York started the second half on the offensive and but for a goalline clearance from Cresswell would have been back on level terms.

However following that clearance from Cresswell a quick counter-attack led to a Cobblers second goal, Marc Richards firing into the bottom corner having been played in by Ricky Holmes.

Holmes was then the victim of a terrible looking challenge from Luke Hendrie which saw the away side reduced to ten men.

Nicky Adams came on for Marc Richards in the Cobblers second change of the afternoon which came midway through the second half.

At 2-0 it was a case of job done and the Cobblers looked in control as they went on to claim another three points to further cement their place at the top of Sky Bet League 2.
