With the takeover of the club having been confirmed 48 hours previously, the Kelvin Thomas era began at Sixfields against Yeovil Town.
Josh Lelan replaced the suspended Brendan Moloney at right-back while Ricky Holmes, out since August with a back injury, was named on the bench. Ben Tozer, who spent near on four seasons at Sixfields between 2011 and 2015, started for Yeovil.
On a cold afternoon, a strong wind made for difficult playing conditions. The first chance of the game fell to Marc Richards but his header was straight at Chris Weale.
Harry Cornick fired wide when presented with an opening for the Glovers while John-Joe O’Toole picked up his fifth yellow card of the season, meaning a one-match ban for the midfielder.
A quick Cobblers counter-attack saw the deadlock broken on 35 minutes, Lawson D’Ath with a cool finish after receiving the ball from Alfie Potter.
Seven minutes into the second half Chris Wilder made a change, Dominic Calvert-Lewin coming on for Alfie Potter.
The Cobblers doubled their lead on 57 minutes, Nicky Adams crossing for Marc Richards to finish from close range.
Yeovil pushed forward looking for a way back into the game but a combination of Adam Smith, the cross bar and a Ryan Cresswell goal line clearance kept the scoreline at 2-0.
Jason Taylor replaced John-Joe O’Toole for the final quarter of an hour, O’Toole leaving the field to a standing ovation. The same reception was then given to Marc Richards as the Cobblers captain made way for Ryan Watson.
In the driving rain the Cobblers closed the game out to round off the perfect week with a victory.
