Rob Page took charge at Sixfields for the first time as the Cobblers took on Championship side QPR in a pre-season friendly.
On an evening that followed the hottest day of the year and with the temperature still above 30c, clear cut chances for either side proved hard to come by.
Gabriel Zakuani headed just wide from a Cobblers corner but it was the visitors who ended the first half strongly.
Ben Gladwin was the first QPR player denied by Adam Smith while Tjaronn Chery drew a finger-tip save from the Cobblers keeper just before the break.
