Northampton Town’s hectic run of fixtures at the start of the 2015/16 season continued on Tuesday night at Sixfields with a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first round tie against League One side Colchester United.

Paul Corry made his first start for the club as Chris Wilder made a handful of changes to the side following the weekend draw at Accrington.

The Cobblers drew first blood on 8 minutes, Dominic-Calvert-Lewin chesting the ball home from close range, Sam Hoskins providing the cross.

Macauley Bonne headed Colchester level just after the half-hour mark, Bonne timing his jump well to connect with a ball in from the left from Callum Harriott.

Chris Wilder made a change at the break, bringing on Josh Lelan at right-back in place of Adam Yates.

Town re-took the lead through Ryan Watson, the on-loan Leicester City midfielder ending a rampaging run with a cracking low strike to beat Elliot Parish in the Colchester goal.

Sammie Szmodics had a chance to make it 2-2 but headed wide following a quick Colchester counter-attack. George Moncur and Macauley Bonne then both also spurned chances for the visitors, Bonne blazing a shot well over the Cobblers cross bar.

Parish saved a Lawson D’Ath free-kick at the second attempt before Jason Taylor came on for Paul Corry. Sam Hoskins then shot straight at Parish while Moncur flashed an effort wide with chances continuing to come at both ends.

Colchester equalised for a second time on 82 minutes with Macauley Bonne again the scorer after getting on the end of a Callum Harriott pass.

The Cobblers were soon back in front however, substitute Marc Richards deflecting the ball home from close range. Richards' 85th minute goal proved to be decisive as the Cobblers came out on top on an entertaining night at Sixfields.
