With Clive Platt (calf) and Jacob Blyth (thigh) both ruled out through injury, Northampton born striker Ivan Toney made his first league start for the club at the age of just 17.

Gary Deegan (back from suspension) and Roy O’Donovan also came back into the side while Paul Reid started in central defence having rejoined the club nine years on from his first spell at Sixfields. Former Cobblers defender Mark Hughes captained Morecambe.

The Cobblers started brightly with Toney causing some early problems for the Morecambe defence. Padraig Amond fired a shot wide under pressure from Reid in the first attack for the visitors.

A cross from Deegan on 26 minutes was well met by Toney but his header went just wide. In a brief spell of Morecambe pressure, Matt Duke made a smart save to deny Alex Kenyon.

More good work from Toney at the end of the first half provided a chance for O’Donovan but his flicked shot went just wide.

Mark Hughes went close to breaking the deadlock just before the hour mark, his powerful header cleared off the line by Darren Carter.

Reid made a good block to deny Sampson while for the Cobblers Toney just failed to connect with a cross from O’Donovan. Ben Tozer then came on for Toney in the Cobblers first change.

Danny Emerton replaced Darren Carter as the game entered the final 10 minutes. The referee Darren Sheldrake then had to leave the field with an injury.

Ian Morris fired a shot wide from distance while Chris Hackett curled a free-kick over from 30-yards. There was to be no late Sixfields drama though as the game ended goalless.
