Alex Nicholls, Ricky Ravenhill and Ben Tozer all came back into the Northampton Town side for the trip to in-form Luton, who started the day third in Sky Bet League 2. Ivan Toney and Daniel Alfei dropped to the bench while Darren Carter missed out with a back injury. Former Cobblers midfielder Luke Guttridge was named among the Luton substitutes.

There was an early moment of danger for the Cobblers when Mark Cullen raced clear but Gregor Robertson intervened with a terrific tackle to halt the Hatters leading goalscorer.

Mark Tyler saved a John-Joe O’Toole header while Nathan Doyle did well to block a Lawson D’Ath shot following a good run by the winger.

Luton made a change just before half-time, Paul Benson coming on for Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu.

Alex Nicholls was denied at close range by Tyler on 56 minutes following a good cross from Enda Stevens. Luke Guttridge then came on for the Hatters as the game reached the hour mark.

Guttridge almost made an immediate impact and would have given the home side the lead but for a good save from Jordan Archer.

Chris Wilder made his first change on 62 minutes, Ivan Toney replacing Alex Nicholls. Chris Hackett then came on for the final quarter of an hour, O’Toole making way.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 90th minute and it was Luton who took the lead, Luke Guttridge cutting in with a low shot to beat Archer. The goal had come out of nothing and there was to be no way back for the Cobblers.
