Lawson D’Ath, Daniel Alfei and Kaid Mohamed, who missed the game at Newport with a cut foot, all came into the Northampton Town side for the first of two consecutive home games. One notable name on the Hartlepool bench was on-loan Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, son of former Cobblers keeper Andy.

Hartlepool took the lead after just 55 seconds, Charlie Wyke getting on the end of a long clearance and capitalising on a slip from a Cobblers defender to slot the ball home.

The Cobblers were back on terms on 12 minutes, Marc Richards scoring from the penalty spot after Mohamed was fouled in the area.

Kaid Mohamed then fired Town in front with a terrific half-volley following some good work on the right from Chris Hackett.

Pools goalscorer Charlie Wyke had to leave the field on 28 minutes, the on-loan Middlesbrough striker stretchered off with a serious looking injury following a lengthy stoppage in play.

Jack Compton flashed a shot just wide before the Cobblers extended their lead, Kaid Mohamed getting on the end of another pin-point Hackett cross to score from close range.

Lee Collins replaced Zander Diamond on 39 minutes in Chris Wilder’s first change. 6 minutes of first half stoppage time were played in which Richards headed over from a Joel Byrom corner.

Kaid Mohamed, on a hat-trick, was denied by a good save from Scott Flinders at the start of the second half while a shot from Lawson D’Ath went just wide. Flinders then made another good save to keep out a terrific strike from Joel Byrom.

Lawson D’Ath extended the Cobblers lead midway through the second half, connecting perfectly with yet another sumptuous cross from Hackett.

Hackett left the field to tremendous applause and a standing ovation on 73 minutes as Ivan Toney came on.

Marc Richards made it 5-1 with a terrific individual effort on 76 minutes, finding the top corner of the net with an exquisite strike.

Match sponsors Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce man of the match Marc Richards was then replaced by John-Joe O’Toole as the Cobblers made their final change.

There were no more goals as the game ended in a 5-1 victory for Town, Chris Wilder’s side bouncing back from the weekend defeat at Newport in some style.
