Zander Diamond and Evan Horwood, both back from injury, came into the Cobblers defence for the long trip north. Joel Byrom returned in midfield having served a one-match ban for accumulated bookings while Ivan Toney partnered captain Marc Richards up front. Former Cobblers striker Derek Asamoah was named in Carlisle’s starting XI.

Matt Duke palmed away an early effort from Kyle Dempsey, David Amoo putting the rebound wide. The Cobblers first sight at goal then saw Ollie Banks draw a save from Dan Hanford.

Carlisle took the lead just after the quarter hour, centre-back Troy Archibald-Henville heading in from a corner.

As the Cobblers looked to level things up Banks curled a volley just over the bar before Hanford made a terrific save to keep out a shot from Darren Carter.

Town felt they should have been awarded a penalty on 41 minutes when Joel Byrom’s shot appeared to be blocked by the hand of a Carlisle player at close range but the referee waved played on.

Deep into first half stoppage time the Cobblers were awarded a penalty after Evan Horwood was brought down in the area. Marc Richards stepped up to score from the spot and send the teams in level at the break.

Hanford saved an Ivan Toney free-kick which went through a crowd of players on 55 minutes while for the Cumbrians Derek Asamoah dragged a shot just wide.

Carlisle were back in front on 61 minutes, Brad Potts getting on the end of David Amoo’s cross following a quick counter-attack from the home side.

Ivan Toney had a shot from an acute angle cleared off the goal line as Town looked for a quick response before Chris Wilder made a double change, bringing on wingers Chris Hackett and Kaid Mohamed.

Lawson D’Ath replaced Ben Tozer for the final 11 minutes before a Toney header was straight at Hanford following a pin-point Hackett cross.

Marc Richards had a shot deflected wide as the game neared the 90-minute mark but despite some late pressure the Cobblers couldn’t equalise for a second time and Carlisle claimed the three points.
