Adam Smith and Lawson D’Ath both came back into the Northampton Town side as they returned to league action at Accrington Stanley following their midweek sojourn to Newcastle United in the Capital One Cup. Zander Diamond (dead leg) failed a fitness test with Ricky Holmes (back) also still missing.

Josh Windass went close for Accrington with a dipping effort from distance on 7 minutes before Matt Crooks headed wide following a Stanley counter-attack. Nicky Adams fired over from an acute angle in the Cobblers first real sight of goal while Adam Smith saved comfortably from Piero Mingoia.

An Adam Buxton free-kick hit the top of the Cobblers cross bar while Seamus Conneely headed wide when well-placed in front of goal.

After a scrappy period of play the Cobblers took the lead on 39 minutes, Adam Smith playing the ball long to Marc Richards who managed to deftly lob the ball over Jason Mooney from a tight angle.

The second half started slowly but Accrington were awarded a penalty on 54 minutes, Lawson D'Ath adjudged to have brought down Josh Windass, who stepped up to score from the spot.

Adam Smith did well to prevent Terry Gornell scoring from close range as Sam Hoskins came on for Alfie Potter.

It was end to end stuff and Marc Richards nearly capitalised on a defensive error from Accrington only to be denied by the legs of Jason Mooney, who from the ensuing corner did well to save a Nicky Adams shot.

Adams was getting closer and on 81 minutes his shot from the edge of the box was turned behind by Mooney. The remainder of the game then passed without real incident as the points were shared.
