MATT TAYLOR SIGNS FOR NORTHAMPTON TOWN

1 August 2016

Ex-Premier League midfielder joins Cobblers

Northampton Town have signed the former Portsmouth, Bolton Wanderers, West Ham United and Burnley midfield player Matt Taylor on a one year contract.

Taylor began his career at Luton Town before spending six years at Portsmouth, playing over 200 times as Pompey established themselves in the Premier League. A £3.5 million move to Bolton Wanderers followed, and after playing almost 150 times in 3 years, he moved to West Ham United for £2.2 million in 2011. After three years and almost 100 appearances for the Hammers, he moved to Burnley.

Taylor appeared 28 times for Burnley last season, scoring four times as they won promotion to the Premier League and the Cobblers have fought off interest from Championship clubs this summer to land Taylor's signature. In total Taylor has amassed 430 appearances scoring 68 goals in a career that has seen him play much of his football in the Premier League, a league in which he played in as recently as the 2014/15 season.

"Matt is a big signing for us," said manager Rob Page.

"He has attracted a high level of interest from some Championship clubs over the last couple of months, but with our good location for him we have been able to convince him to make the move to Sixfields.

"The Chairman deserves a lot of praise for helping us get this deal done. We always said we would be patient this summer to get the right players in, and Matty gives us options and has a wonderful left foot.  He trained with us last week and really lifted training and he watched the game on Saturday from the stands and he can’t wait to get going.

"He has proven quality, he is a winner, he gives us something different and he will fit in well with the other players we have at the club.  I am also looking for him to bring some of the younger players on with his experience.''
