Rob Page shuffled his pack for the Cobblers second group fixture in the EFL Trophy.

Amongst the changes David Cornell replaced Adam Smith in goal while Marc Richards partnered JJ Hooper in attack. Rod McDonald, Aaron Phillips and Emmanuel Sonupe also all came into the side with Academy striker Joe Iaciofano named on the bench.

Coventry took the lead inside 30 seconds at the Ricoh, Daniel Agyei going on a run before slotting the ball past Cornell.

Marc Richards levelled almost immediately however, side-footing in JJ Hooper’s cross from close range.

Kenji Gorre saw a shot saved by Lee Burge as the frenetic start to the game continued before the home side re-took the lead, Jodi Jones with a smart finish.

Ex-Sky Blues defender Phillips tried a shot from distance that Burge did well to save while Chris McCann fired an effort narrowly wide for the Sky Blues.

Vladimir Gadzhev tested Cornell at the start of the second half while at the other end Burge denied Hooper. The Coventry keeper pulled off another good stop to prevent Harry Beautyman from levelling the scores while Richards saw a shot blocked at close range.

The home side doubled their lead as the second half approached the midway point, substitute Ruben Lameiras chipping the ball over Cornell after getting on the end of a long throughball.

Harry Beautyman was replaced by Lawson D’Ath after appearing to pick up a knock but there was to be no Cobblers comeback in the closing stages as they exited the revamped competition despite a game against West Ham United still to come in November.
