Northampton Town were unchanged for their first trip to The Valley in nearly 50 years. New signings Emmanuel Sonupe and Lewin Nyatanga were named on the bench while Ricky Holmes started for the home side having made the switch from Sixfields in the summer.

Alex Revell headed the Cobblers in front just after the quarter hour, Revell on the end of an inch-perfect Alfie Potter cross to nod past Declan Rudd in the Charlton goal.

Adam Smith saved comfortably from Holmes as the home side looked to muster a response to falling behind. Harry Beautyman then had a chance to double the Cobblers lead but the midfielder sent his header from Potter's cross inches wide of the far post.

The home side started the second half on the front foot and it took a good save from Smith to turn behind a fierce effort from Andrew Crofts. Nicky Ajose's first time shot went wide before Rob Page shuffled his pack, bringing on Sam Hoskins for Harry Beautyman.

Charlton equalised on 57 minutes, Johnnie Jackson scoring from 10-yards having been played in by Ajose’s slide rule pass.

Marc Richards replaced Kenji Gorre for the final twenty minutes while Charlton’s Josh Magennis headed wide.

Nicky Ajose and Addicks substitute Ademola Lookman both tried shots from distance that were comfortably saved by Smith as the Cobblers defended stoutly to see out the game to a draw.
