Ollie Banks came straight into the Cobblers side after joining on loan from Chesterfield while long-term absentee Lewis Hornby was named on the bench. John-Joe O’Toole started for Southend.

Jordan Archer made a good save to deny O’Toole on 5 minutes, Jack Payne putting the rebound wide. A largely scrappy period of play then followed with clear cut chances for either side proving hard to come by.

Stewart Murdoch had to be replaced just after the half hour after picking up what looked like a hamstring injury, Chris Hackett the player to come on.

The Cobblers first real sight of goal came on 40 minutes, an under pressure Banks shooting wide following a good nod down from Kelvin Langmead.

Kaid Mohamed came on for the second half in place of Joel Byrom. Kelvin Langmead went close from a dangerous looking Darren Carter corner on 52 minutes but Barry Corr back defending did just about enough.

The game's pivotal point came midway through the second half when Jordan Archer brought down Barry Corr in the penalty area after spilling a cross. Southend were awarded a penalty with Archer sent off, Matt Duke coming on for Ricky Ravenhill.

Barry Corr then stepped up to score from the spot and put the home side in front.

With Southend now a goal up and with a man advantage, Duke made a good save to turn behind a driven effort from Myles Weston.

It was 2-0 on 78 minutes, David Worrall getting on the end of a Weston cross to score from close range. 2-0 was how it stayed as Southend claimed the three points.
